ON PUBLICATIONS is a research project launched by 98weeks in April 2010. The research consists in re-reading and interpreting several historical arts and culture publications that were produced and distributed in the Arab world since the 1930s. As the material has become a testimonial to a certain artistic and intellectual life that flourished throughout the Arab world, our interest is to activate it by inviting writers, poets, artists and collectors to intervene or re-interpret specific issues from these collections. We hope that this will create a space to reflect upon the different processes of modernization and ideals of modernity that were breaking through the region, and that were expressed in publications through translations, graphic experimentation, aesthetics, language, etc.
The research will have four main focuses: Mainstream publications; Literary publications; Visual arts publications and fanzines and Porn publications. Collections presenting these publications will be regularly displayed in 98weeks’ newly refurbished project space.
